Fishing

Loch Leven has been renowned as a brown trout fishery for well over 100 years and is now regularly stocked with high quality rainbows from its own rearing facility.

The loch is some 3,500 acres of predominately shallow water with an average depth of 12 feet making, an ideal water for fishing.

The Loch Leven Trout is fast growing with a prink flesh, similar to Sea Trout, and is known for its fighting qualities. The Loch is managed by Loch Leven Fisheries which has a well-maintained fleet of 18-foot clinker built boats.

Just a short drive away salmon fishing is available on the River Tay from mid January until the end of October. April and May are the hot times for spring salmon. These fish can be large; most years specimens of 30 or more pounds will be encountered. By June the first of the grilse arrive and continue to run from then until the end of the season, their weight increasing with each passing month. Large salmon are mixed with the grilse to add spice to the sport. By autumn some of these fish can be veritable monsters!

Grayling are not indigenous to the area, but they have existed here for over 100 years. Several of the rivers have abundant graying populations and specimens of 2 pounds or more are not uncommon. They are in peak condition from late summer through to January.

Good quality pike, perch and roach can be found throughout the area. Pike between 10-20 pounds are relatively common and larger fish are sometimes caught. Several coarse fisheries contain a variety of species including carp, crucian carp, rudd and tench.

Popular fishing areas:

  • Loch Leven
  • River Tay
  • River Earn
  • South Esk River
